Rosé 2023
Release Date: May 18, 2024
What it is
A rosé made with 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Zweigelt grapes grown in the Lake Country sub-appellation of the Okanagan Valley.
Where it was grown
Pinot Noir from Wendell Vineyard is combined with Pinot Noir and Zweigelt from Arrowleaf Estate Vineyard.
When it was grown
The 2023 growing season brought extreme weather and a small crop of grapes. It started in December of 2022 when an outbreak of arctic air damaged many of the fruitful buds on our grapevines. Spring was cool and dry and then summer arrived to deliver one of the hottest and driest growing seasons on record. A few vines collapsed in the heat while most set a small crop of concentrated grapes. Ripening sped along through August and our entire harvest was condensed into the month of September. October was unusually quiet in the vineyard and winery. We enjoyed the downtime during the beautiful fall days, hoping for a mild winter ahead.
How it was made
The dry growing season and low yields in the vineyard made it imperative to preserve the acidity and freshness in the grapes. To do this, we harvested earlier than we would have if we were making red wine. The Pinot Noir grapes received a short maceration period of 3 hours to extract colour from the skins. The darker Zweigelt grapes were whole-cluster pressed to yield a lightly coloured juice. We fermented the juice cool and used a yeast strain specifically known to highlight red berry and floral aromas. The resulting wine is a full-bodied and concentrated example of rosé.
How it tastes
The bouquet has aromas of strawberry, red Anjou pear, rose petal and licorice root. On the palate it is rich and harmonious with a long finish.
