Summerstorm 2023
Release Date: June 29, 2024
What it is
Summerstorm is a unique rosé sparkling wine made from Zweigelt grapes using the Charmat method (méthode cuvée close).
Where it was grown
Arrowleaf Estate Vineyard, BCVQA Okanagan Valley – Lake Country
When it was grown
The 2023 growing season brought extreme weather and a small crop of grapes. It started in December of 2022 when an outbreak of arctic air damaged many of the fruitful buds on our grapevines. Spring was cool and dry and then summer arrived to deliver one of the hottest and driest growing seasons on record. A few vines collapsed in the heat while most set a small crop of concentrated grapes. Ripening sped along through August and our entire harvest was condensed into the month of September. October was unusually quiet in the vineyard and winery. We enjoyed the downtime during the beautiful fall days, hoping for a mild winter ahead.
How it was made
We picked our estate Zweigelt when the grapes had low potential alcohol and prominent acidity. Gentle, whole-cluster pressing was used to extract a small amount of colour. The base wine was fermented dry and aged in neutral oak puncheons for 6 months. After the initial aging period, the wine was transferred to a pressure tank and inoculated with yeast and sugar to initiate the secondary fermentation. The lees in the tank were stirred regularly to provide more harmonious integration of the bubbles. The wine was filtered and a dosage was added for the desired sweetness before bottling.
How it tastes
Clean and fresh with aromas of pink grapefruit, apple skin and wild roses. On the palate the brut-level sweetness provides balance to the acidity and minerality. The finely integrated bubbles add length to the finish. This sparkling wine is ideal for a summer celebration. 🌱 Vegan Wine
